Share in the joy of singing with Ginny Hawker, Val Mindel and Emily Miller as they teach their approaches to harmony singing. Ginny is a legend steeped in the traditions of Appalachian ballads and primitive baptist material. Hailing from Eastern Kentucky, Sarah Kate is a champion mountain dulcimer player and skilled teacher. All levels are welcome and loaner instruments will be provided. - Old Time Fiddle with John Showman (intermediate/advanced) 11am-12:15pm
John Showman of the Lonesome Ace Stringband will share his approach to Old Time fiddle. He is one of the grooviest and funkiest Old Time fiddlers on the scene today. This workshop will be geared towards intermediate to advanced players but all are welcome. - Old Time Banjo with Chris Coole (intermediate/advanced) 12:30-1:45pm
A clawhammer banjo icon, Chris has a unique approach to Old Time banjo that is innovative and creative while steeped in tradition. Learn from one of the modern greats! Whether you play guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, bass, banjo, fiddle or dance, every instrument in an Old Time stringband is responsible keeping the groove steady. Max Heineman of Lonesome Ace Stringband will demonstrate his approach to the subtle yet critical art of Old Time Rhythm. Stephanie Coleman digs into the subtleties of how to add drive and groove to your fiddle playing in this workshop. Learn from the master himself! Phil is a champion flatfoot dancer and renowned teacher. He dances with grace and a subtlety very few can match. All levels are welcome. - Blind Willie Johnson Guitar Workshop with Hubby Jenkins (all levels) 11am-12:15pm
Seminal gospel blues artist Blind Willie Johnson left behind records whose impact and influence are immeasurable. In this class, we will break down his slide techniques and some of his most iconic songs. - Old Time Banjo Up-Picking with Nora Brown (intermediate/advanced) 5-6:15pm
One of the banjo world’s bright young stars, Nora Brown demonstrates some up-picking techniques for Old Time banjo. Basic banjo experience will be helpful but it’s OK if you’ve never up-picked before. - Ottawa Valley Step-Dancing with Mama’s Broke (all levels) 3:30-4:45pm
Lisa and Mary Lou of the Canadian duo Mama’s Broke will show a handful of steps from the Ottawa Valley Step-Dancing tradition, a relative of clogging and flatfooting. All levels welcome. - Basics of Old Time Banjo with Hilary Hawke (beginner) 3:30-4:45pm
