You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with your assignment description before you arrive. You'll receive more detailed instructions (where needed) when you arrive. Volunteer Assignment Descriptions
Backstage Help
You will be stationed backstage next to the Harborview Stage. This area is where artists and tech crew will congregate and relax, warm up and eat meals. You will be helping to manage the food and drink that is provided for artists. Keep an eye on the trash and empty if needed. You may be asked to move chairs and equipment. You are essentially an extra set of hands that may be asked to perform a variety of tasks. It is not required you stand backstage the whole time if there is some downtime. You’re welcome to pop out and watch performances on the Harborview stage. There will also be a Stage Manager responsible for keeping the artists on schedule, making announcements from stage, etc – you won’t have to worry about this part.
Drinks Helper
You’ll be helping Bluebird Cocktail Room (our drink vendor) pour drinks and sell beer. They’ll provide you with more detailed instructions on what is involved when you arrive.
Harborview/Studio Usher
You will be stationed indoors and helping to assist guests as they navigate both the Studio and Harborview Stage areas. Please take note of the schedule so you can familiarize yourself with who is playing when. You’ll notice that the Studio and Harborview Stages toggle back and forth. Please position yourself by the entrance to the stage area that is currently active. When positioned by the Studio Stage entrance, please make sure the door to the Studio Stage is closed when there is a performance going on to minimize disruptive sound from coming in the main gallery. Both areas are open to guests at all times. Guests can come and go as they please from the Studio Stage area – just be sure the door generally remains closed when someone is performing in there. Seating is first come, first served in both areas.
Instrument Check-in
You will be stationed in Assembly Room #1 where the instrument check-in is located. Your primary duty is to ensure a safe and smooth check-in / check-out process for guests and their instruments. More specific instructions on how the process works will be explained when you arrive.
Main Tickets / Info Table
You will be stationed inside the lobby by the front entrance to the BMI. Your primary jobs include checking guests in and answering any questions they may have about the festival. Guests will need to provide their names when checking in. Once you locate their name, they will receive a wristband. Guests may ask you during the day where things are located so be sure to familiarize yourself with the space and the schedule. We’re asking you to be very friendly and excited to greet all guests! On Saturday, there will be a representative from our ticketing platform TicketHive who will be there to help show you how to check guests in and sell tickets.
Parking Lot Helper
You are stationed outdoors by the entrance to the primary parking lot. Your primary duty is to ensure cars are able to safely and efficiently figure out where they need to go. There is limited parking space in the parking lot (approximately 150 spaces). These are first come, first served. We anticipate the lot to fill up. Guests will be coming and going so please monitor availability in the parking lot. If there are no spaces remaining in the lot, encourage guests to park along Light Street. These spaces are free.
Pavilion Tickets
You will be stationed outside by the entrance to the pavilion. Your primary jobs include checking guests in and answering any questions they may have about the festival. Guests will need to provide their names when checking in. Once you locate their name, they will receive a wristband. Please note that from 10:30am-3pm, there is free family programming. If guests say they are here for the family programming, they may be admitted without a wristband. Please keep a tally of these guests. On Saturday, there will be a representative from our ticketing platform TicketHive who will be there to help show you how to check guests in and sell tickets.
Setup / Breakdown / Vendor Needs
This position is fairly self-explanatory. You are willing and able move heavy objects, set up/breakdown chairs, empty trash, assist tech/sound crew with setting up/packing up their gear if asked, helping vendors load and unload their materials and other related tasks. You will be instructed on specifically what is needed on the day of by the festival staff. This role involves some manual labor so please let us know ASAP if you aren’t comfortable with this so we can find a new position for you.

There often are volunteers who have to drop out or don’t show up on the day of. You are waiting in the wings to swoop in and help where needed. You may be asked to help with a variety of tasks. We’ll keep you posted. As this is our first year at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, additional help may be needed in areas we don’t anticipate. We ask that you are willing to be flexible during your time slot. We will find something helpful for you to do.
Workshop Check In, Hercules
You will be stationed by the entrance to the top floor of the Hercules Building which is a secondary building in the parking lot. Take the elevator to the top floor. This is the “Hercules Building” workshop space. The BMI staff refers to this as the “Liberty Room.” Your primary duty is to help safely and efficiently check-in guests to the workshop space. You may also be asked to move chairs around and keep the space tidy. You will be given a clipboard with the names of those who have pre-registered for the workshops. If someone would like to attend the workshop but they haven’t signed up in advance, ask them to wait patiently until the start of the workshop. If there is still room in the space when the workshop begins, use your discretion for whether or not to admit those waiting. We’ve set the capacity for this space at 55 but it’s very possible more can fit. You may sit in on the workshop. Be sure the door to the workshop is closed while the workshop is going on. The change-over between workshops is only 15 minutes so please kindly ask guests to quickly leave the space when the workshop ends. We need to keep things on schedule.
